Exploring the Intersections of Cryptocurrency and Gambling: Insights from a Seminar
As a researcher with a deep interest in the intersections of cryptocurrency and gambling, our co-founder Fred Steinmetz recently had the pleasure of leading a seminar on this topic at the Landesfachstelle Glücksspielsucht North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) – a non-profit organization focused on information, support and consultancy as well as prevention of gambling addiction. The seminar was designed to provide participants, care-workers for addicted people, with a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between these two domains, as well as the potential risks and benefits of their intersection.
The seminar was structured in a way that allowed participants to build a solid foundation of knowledge on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology before diving into the topic of gambling. We began with an introduction to the different types of cryptoassets, such as NFTs and utility tokens, and how they are used in various domains. From there, we explored the basics of blockchain technology, including how it works and how it can be used to facilitate secure transactions.
Once participants had a solid understanding of the technology underpinning cryptocurrency, we dove deeper into the topic of gambling. We explored the similarities between gambling and cryptocurrency trading, such as the potential for high risk and high reward and also examined how cryptocurrency can be used as a wager in online and blockchain-based casinos as well as the potential implications of this phenomenon.
Throughout the seminar, we relied on a mix of lecture-style presentations, group discussions, and case studies to keep participants engaged and promoted active learning. Moreover, participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their own insights and experiences during the seminar.
The seminar was particularly beneficial for care workers who support individuals struggling with addiction or other mental health challenges. By providing a comprehensive overview of cryptocurrency and gambling, we were able to help participants better understand the potential risks and benefits of these activities, and how they may intersect with each other. This understanding can be incredibly valuable for care workers who are looking for ways to support their clients and help them make informed decisions.
